Polonnaruwa was the second great capital of ancient Sri Lanka, flourishing from the 10th to 13th centuries under kings who built extraordinary stone monuments, vast irrigation reservoirs, and a royal city of palaces and pleasure gardens. Unlike Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is compact and remarkably well preserved — its centrepiece, the Gal Vihara, features four giant Buddha figures carved from a single granite face with a precision that still defies explanation.

Gal Vihara Rock Sculptures
The masterpiece of Polonnaruwa — four colossal Buddha figures cut from a single granite cliff face: a seated Buddha in meditation, a 15-metre reclining figure entering parinirvana, and two standing figures. Among the finest Buddhist sculptures in the world.
Vatadage Circular Shrine
The magnificent circular relic house with four entrances, four Buddha statues, and exquisitely carved moonstone doorsteps — the most photographed structure in Polonnaruwa.
Royal Palace & Council Chamber
The ruins of the 12th-century royal palace — originally seven storeys high, now three levels of impressive stone walls with carved pillar bases and a throne platform.

Parakrama Samudra & Lotus Pond
Walk along the bund of the great reservoir built by King Parakramabahu — still providing irrigation water today. Visit the elegant 12th-century Lotus Pond.

The soaring remains of Lankatilaka — a massive standing Buddha temple with a 17-metre headless figure — and the pristine white Kiri Vehera stupa.
